While there are so many blessings that come with being a part of an organization like Saratoga Olive Oil Company, I think one of the greatest benefits is standing in the epicenter of a destination where so many walks of life travel from near and far in pursuit of their favorite olive oils, vinegar, sea salts and more. In exchange for acting as their personal Tasting Concierges as they try all the amazing flavors in the shop, my staff and I have the good fortune of being provided with a glimpse into the lives and experiences of our loyal customers. We hear about everything from their travels around the world to their use of our products in their kitchens. We even get the occasional proud sharing by a parent or grandparent about a family member’s accomplishments in business, education, or athletics. As unique individuals, we intersect like the iconic rings of the Olympics in the shared space of the Saratoga Olive Oil Company, to collectively discover our similarities across what can seem, at times, like a vast ocean of differences.
Just recently, I was talking with one of our local patrons, Pat, who was looking to stock up on some of her favorite oils. Over the course of our interaction, we discovered that not only do we both love Lake Placid but also share in plans to spend time there in February. However, what draws us there is somewhat different. Aside from the fact that Saratoga Olive Oil has a beautiful tasting gallery right on Main Street, for my wife, Cathy, and I, it is reminiscent of when we got engaged and even went on our honeymoon in Lake Placid. In addition, I have run the Lake Placid Marathon, and my wife was in attendance at the 1980 Olympics with her family, and to this day is an Olympic fanatic. I thought this was an interesting, relevant, and timely share being that the winter Olympics are currently being held in Beijing. Funny, in a split second, even that little networking voice inside my head started cheering… “Great job Steve! There is no way anyone can top that share about Lake Placid! Boy, you really nailed it!” That was, of course, until Pat offered a peek into her world.
After indulging me for as much time as it took to complete my personal share while wrapping up Pat’s oils and vinegars, she casually asked me if I remembered all the stories she had shared in the shop over the years about her grandson, Jonny, embracing the sport of luge while in college. I gleefully recalled and asked about what young Jonny was up to now. With the most beautiful twinkle in her eyes, Pat said that Jonny was on his way to Beijing to compete on behalf of the United States in the Men’s Luge competition. She and an entire network of friends and family will be convening in Lake Placid for a viewing party to watch Jonny Gustafson strive for the Gold!! Humbled by Pat’s story of this young man pursuing his childhood dreams and now on his way to the Olympics, I was awestruck and at a rare loss of words. Jonny was on his way to compete – IN THE OLYMPICS!!! And at that moment, there was such a strong connection between Pat and myself. It was not about a shared passion for olive oil and balsamic vinegar – though, from what I understand, Jonny loves our products as well – and it wasn’t about shared experiences in Lake Placid. What connected us at that moment was a proud grandmother, an Olympian from Upstate New York, and our enduring American Spirit. Good luck Jonny Gustafson! Go for The Gold!
